Flower rich meadow
Belted Galloway calves
The flower rich meadow has been taken out of crop production for 25 years. This has allowed the thin chalk downland soil to regenerate its rich natural biodiversity. The flowers vary according to the season. It supports a good population of cowslips, orchids, bird’s foot trefoil, sainfoin and wild clovers. These contribute to a typical chalk downland grass sward.
We manage the grass with a small herd of Belted Galloway cattle. They are a native breed who have their origin in south-west Scotland. This hardy breed is well suited to all year-round grazing. Their white belt means they are often referred to as Belties.
