Hens

We have a small egg sales diversification. Typically, we have about 100 laying hens which are split into 3 groups according to their age. The hens are brought onto the farm as point of lay pullets at about 18 weeks old.

The hens are all hybrids and are not pure breeds. Hybrid hens are better for laying eggs than pure breed hens. The hens are all brown hens coming from specialist rearing farms. The hybrids vary, with popular ones including Lohmann Browns, Bovans and Maran Cuivree. The eggs are mostly sold at the farm gate.

The hens are kept in runs with high fences to keep the foxes out. Even with the high fences the hens are shut in their houses at night for extra protection. When there is a bird flu outbreak, the government can advise to put a net over each run to prevent access by wild birds to their runs.
